Warning
|
- Do not consume just any Comfrey plant,
grown in your or in a friend’s garden!
There are four kinds of Comfrey plants! Symphytum officinale, Prickly comfrey
(S. asperum), Russian Comfrey (S x uplandicum) and S.tuberosum. Prickly Comfrey and Russian comfrey
are sometimes mistakenly sold or used as the safe Comfrey. It contains higher levels and/or more
toxic types of alkaloids. Russian
Comfrey is considered poisonous when used excessively. Only experts can tell these four
kinds apart. The plants are,
for example, distinguished by their seeds.
The seeds are as big as a metal pin’s head and one cannot see the
difference by merely looking at them with the naked eye. Other distinguishing factors are minute
differences between the flowers, coloration and length of stems as well as
minute differences between the shape and size of the leaves.
- Do not consume products containing Comfrey
roots, as the (toxic) alkaloid level is very high in the
roots.
